How To Find Your Life's Purpose

Do this if you feel lost...

We've all been there—standing at the crossroads of life, overwhelmed by choices, feeling utterly lost. I’ve lost track of the number of people between 25-40 that I’ve had this conversation with. Many of them have successful businesses or careers, yet feel lost. It’s something I struggled with years ago too. Here’s what I did that I share with anyone who cares to listen. Do this if you feel lost…start with your ‘why’. Hear me out…

Imagine for a moment you're hiking in a vast forest, you’ve wandered off the beaten path. You've been walking for hours with no end in sight. You seem to have passed the same landmark several times. You’re going round in circles. Stuck in a loophole. Panic begins to set in. But there's a simple solution: try to trace your steps back home. Start at the beginning.

In our life's journey, "home" is not a physical place. It's your 'why'—your core purpose, the deep-seated reason you wake up every morning. It's the compass that gives direction to your journey. Now, you might ask, "Isn't that my job? My career?" No, those are your 'what.' Your profession is just one expression of your purpose. The true north of your compass—the 'why'—is more fundamental.

Simon Sinek's Golden Circle framework paints this beautifully. At the core is the 'Why'—your driving force. Encircling it is the 'How'—the vehicle or the methods you employ. And on the outermost is the 'What'—the tangible things you do, be it your job, hobbies, or daily activities.

Your 'Why' isn't a fleeting passion; it's your divine purpose. It's not about climbing the corporate ladder or achieving fleeting accolades; it's the inner call that aligns with your authentic self.

Feeling lost happens when we drift too far from our 'Why' and get caught up in the 'What.' We become so engrossed in the tangibles that we lose sight of our purpose.

But remember, every journey, no matter how daunting, begins with understanding your 'Why.' Once that's clear, the 'How' and 'What' fall into place. So, if you ever feel lost, take a pause, breathe, and trace your steps back to your 'Why.' Reconnect with it. For it's in this sacred space of understanding and introspection that you'll find your way again.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself to Find Your 'Why'

  1. What are the moments that make you feel most alive? Think back to times when you've felt truly invigorated. What were you doing? Who were you with? These moments often hint at your deeper purpose.

  2. If money and time were no object, what would you be doing? This helps you differentiate between what you do out of obligation and what genuinely aligns with your heart.

  3. What issues or causes do you feel most passionate about? Often, our 'Why' is connected to something bigger than ourselves. It could be a cause, a community, or a vision of a better world.

  4. How would I want to be remembered? Envisioning your legacy can shed light on what's genuinely important to you and can guide you towards your 'Why.'

  5. If you had to teach something, what would it be? The subjects we're most passionate about teaching often tie back to our deeper purpose. It's an avenue where our expertise and enthusiasm intersect.

Stay true to your compass, your WHY.

Spend some quiet time with these questions. Journal your thoughts, speak them aloud, or discuss them with someone you trust. Often, the journey to find our 'Why' requires introspection, patience, and, most importantly, honesty with oneself.
