From Entrepreneur to Solopreneur

How I went from leading others to leading myself.

I wouldn't wish what I experienced in 2020 on anyone, even my worst enemy. I experienced loss at a level I never imagined. I've since learned my lessons. I've grown better for it. Transitioning from an entrepreneur building a creative agency to a solopreneur building a one-person business wasn't easy. But it's one of the best things that has happened to me.

Here's my story, or you can watch it on my YouTube here

I ran a creative agency, Fireworks, for five years, and I enjoyed every second of it. I enjoyed helping my clients build their brands and tell their stories. Seeing my creative work come to life was an enriching experience.

I loved sharing my knowledge, expertise, and experience with others, starting independently. Although I enjoyed delivering great work, the pressures of dealing with salaries, late payments, and debts were taking their toll. It all came crashing when the pandemic hit. Business dried up, leaving me with a hefty debt to pay off.

After I'd cried and comforted myself, I decided to bet on myself. The transition was scary, but it's been one of the best decisions I've ever made. I "invented" a job role for myself as a Vice Chief Creative Officer, providing creative direction for businesses that couldn't afford to hire a Creative Director or Chief Creative Officer. I put my story out there and told the world I was available for hire. I bet on my strengths and passion, and it paid off.

In 2022, to create more wealth for myself and others, I decided to go entirely into building a one-person business that helps ambitious individuals launch successful one-person businesses by leveraging the power of the Internet. My business is people, turning people into businesses and helping them monetise their skills, passions, knowledge or experience.

So if you're looking to transition, whether you still have a career or you're an entrepreneur just looking for freedom, this is for you. I discovered the beauty of solopreneurship because I was forced into it. Failing to build my creative agency led me to build an ambitious one-person business.

Here's what to do if you're considering starting a one-person business:

1. Know why you want to be a solopreneur. Are you seeking freedom from the corporate world or going further in a specific field?

2. Identify your unique strengths and passions. What do you do better than anyone else? What makes you happy?

3. Identify your target market and how you can help them. What is the problem that needs solving? What does your audience need—and what are they willing to pay for?

4. Start small and test the waters. You don't have to quit your day job right away. Test your idea by offering a free product or service, then see if people will pay for it once they've tried it out.

5. Build an online presence and get active in the community. Remember that it's not just about what you do; it's also about how well you do it. It would be best to ensure people know who you are and what you stand for.

6. Take action every day, and don't give up! It takes time, patience, and hard work to build a solid career as a solopreneur—but it can be done!
